Verbal communication is one of the most important achievements of human beings. Communication handicaps may lead to reduced job chances or even social isolation, and so voice disorders need to be identified, described and treated appropriately. Auditory voice quality judgements are being used intensively for the clinical assessment of pathological voice by medical doctors. These judgements aid the indication, selection, evaluation and optimization of clinical treatment techniques. Diplophonia is a sign of a vocal dysfunction, i.e. the simultaneous presence of two pitches in the voice sound. We bring together views from phonetics, speech acoustics, medicine, as well as signal and video processing, machine learning and pattern classification to clarify basic concepts through theoretical analysis, simulation studies, and experiments. Diplophonic voice is investigated by means of perceptual audio labelling, high-speed videos of the vocal folds and acoustic analysis.
