General

  • Consider where to store your soundfiles and the associated STx project file. Normally you will find it convenient to store them all in a dedicated directory. 
  • Start STx.
  • Create a new Project file (also called DataSet) preferably at the same disk location as the soundfiles.
  • Add one or more soundfile to your STx project. The easiest way is to use the Windows Explorer to drag the respective files to the STx window and to drop them there. Another often used alternative is the STx tool FindFile (see below and the article STx-FindFile).
  • Check the contents of the STx soundfile list. If some files you have dragged and dropped to STx are missing, this means that the respective files are in an incompatible format. STx supports ".WAV" files only.
  • If you wish, you may at any time record new soundfile(s) from within STx. This is done with the STx Recorder.
  • Double-click on a soundfile entry. STx opens the segment list of the selected soundfile. As long as you did not segment the file, there will only be one segment present, "Signal.All", denoting the whole of the file.
  • To play the content of the soundfile double-click on the automatically created segment entry Signal.All.
  • The STx project is now ready for further processing.

Note 1: Click on the progress bar during sound reproduction in order to listen into any part of your soundfile (see Play). 

Note 2: New soundfiles can be added to your project (DataSet) at any time.

Important: Deleting a soundfile in the soundfile list does not touch the soundfile itself. Functions from the Signal Modification section of STx only change the content of the soundfile(s). That's why soundfile copies should be used in these cases. STx currently provides no Undo function on sound signals.

Working with STx is highly effective because:

  • STx is specifically designed to handle collections of large binary sound objects in the range of hundreds of GBytes.
  • STx provides many sound database functions.
  • STx is able to create publication-quality graphs.
  • STx can communicate with external programs such as word processors, graphics, mathematics and statistical packages on an ASCII file basis or via DDE and DCOM.
